What's the Frequency, eCircles?

I bought myself a CD burner for Christmas 2000, mostly because I love music and wanted to make my own compilation CDs. The very first CD I made was entitled "What's the Frequency, eCircles?" It's a collection of songs that made an impression on me during my eCircles years.

Following is a track listing and the lyrics to the songs on the CD.

  1. Here Comes the Sun/Beatles (Harrison)

Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
and I say, it's all right.

Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter.
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here.
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
and I say, it's all right.

Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces.
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been here.
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
and I say, it's all right.

Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...

Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting.
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been clear.
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
and I say, it's all right.
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun.
    It's all right.
    It's all right.

  2. Save Me/Aimee Mann (Mann)

You look like a perfect fit
for a girl in need of a tourniquet
    But can you save me
    Come on and save me
    If you could save me
    From the ranks
    of the freaks
    who suspect
    they could never love anyone

    'Cause I can tell
    you know what it's like
    The long farewell
    of the hunger strike
    But can you save me
    Come on and save me
    If you could save me
    From the ranks
    of the freaks
    who suspect
    they could never love anyone

    You struck me dumb
    Like radium
    Like Peter Pan
    Or Superman
    you will come
    To save me
    Why don't you
    save me
    Come on and
    save me
    From the ranks
    of the freaks
who suspect they could never love anyone

  3. Born for Me/Paul Westerberg (Westerberg)

    When the loneliest eyes
    And the emptiest arms
    Finally decide to meet
With a head in a lap
And a tongue tied in knots
    Then the loneliest eyes
    Try and speak
    You were born for me
    Beautiful and blue
I could die here with you

    For a couple of nights
You could say you're my wife
    You could stay
or run away if you please
    The heaviest head
    and the emptiest hands
You'll be safe in the light
    When we kiss
    When we breathe
    You were born for me
    Beautiful and blue
I could die here with you
    You were born for me
    Beautiful and blue
    Stay here with you

    I can't bear it
    I can't share it
With anybody in my little world
    I can't hide it
    I'll never find it
    With another girl
    When we kiss
    When we breathe
    You were born for me
    Beautiful and blue
I could die here with you

    I can't bear to
    Try and share you
Well, I'm the one to talk
    You're the one that's free
    When you forget me
    Then you'll let me
    Fade away...
    You'll always be
    Born for me
    Beautiful and blue
I could die here with you
    You were born for me
    Beautiful and blue
I could die here with you

  4. Far, Far Away/Wilco (Tweedy)

Far, far away from those city lights
The night'll be shining on you tonight
    Far, far away from you
On the dark side of the moon

Oh I long to hold you in my arms and sway
    Kissing right on the CTA
I need to see you tonight
    And those bright lights
    Oh I know it's right
    Deep in my heart
    I know it's right

By the bed, by the light that you read by
By the time that I get home to say goodnight
I need to see you again
On the dark side, my friend
    On the dark side

  5. No Reservations/Hüsker Dü (Mould)

I hear some news, I read the words
    It's different every day
I get my thoughts from a letter that's lost
    That someone threw away
It says, "Don't give up, 'cause you can't give away"
    The thought's appreciated
Now at the best, you've second guessed
And never should you have waited

(Never changes, the things I feel inside
Sit by a lake and cry
Like a shingle on a roof in a windstorm
Should I let loose and fly?)

An overpass, and some corn in a field
    Fat birds on the line
    Dented guard rail, immaculate bumper
    Protecting your design
A broken down shack with a pond in the back
    Laundry out to dry
Some of them barren, some of them whole
All of them have no time

    Come along with me
Come along, come along with me
We'll go to places that we have never seen
And if we're together, we'll have a happy time
    'Cause I got no reservations

  6. Magic 8 Ball/Cub (Cub)

I have a horseshoe hanging right above my door
I had a black cat but she doesn't live here anymore
    I look for omens
    I search for clues
and the mystery that I wanna solve is you

I cross my fingers every time that you walk by
I put the whammy on you with my hypnotic eye
    But you're oblivious
    Don't take me serious
So now there's one last thing that I can try

My magic 8 ball tells me just what I should do
I wanna ask it whether I should be in love with you
Will it tell me yes or no
Will it tell me stop or go
I close my eyes and hold my breath and it says
Decidedly so, decidedly so, decidedly so

My four leaf clover's going right into the trash
My rabbit's foot, my voodoo doll, they'll follow fast
    I'll step on every crack
You know I won't look back
Cause now my lucky streak is gonna last

  7. My Life Is Right/Big Star (Bell/Eubanks)

Once I walked a lonely road
I had no one to share my load
But then you came and showed the way
And now I hope you're here to stay

You give me life, you are a day
You give me light and that's right
You give me life, you are a day
You give me light and that's right
So right, so right, so right

    Lonely days of uncertainty
They disappear when you're near me
When you're around my life's worthwhile
And now I long to see you smile

    My life is right
    My life is right
    My life is right

  8. Complicated Life/Kinks (Davies)

Well I woke up this morning with a pain in my neck
A pain in my heart and a pain in my chest
I went to the doctor and the good doctor said
You gotta slow down your life or you're gonna be dead
Cut out the struggle and strife
    It only complicates your life

Well I cut down women I cut down booze
I stopped ironing my shirts, cleaning my shoes
I stopped going to work, reading the news
I'm sitting twiddling my thumbs cos I got nothing to do
    Minimal exercise
    To help uncomplicate my life
Gotta stand and face it life is so complicated
Ladi dah di dah dah, ladi dah di dah dah
Got to get away from the complicated life son
Life is overrated, life is complicated
    Must alleviate this, complicated life

    Like old Mother Hubbard
I got nothin' in the cupboard
Got no dinner and I got no supper
Holes in my shoes, I got holes in my socks
    I can't go to work cos I can't get a job
The bills are rising sky high
    It's such a complicated life
    Gotta stand and face it
    Life is so complicated

  9. What's the Frequency, Kenneth?/R.E.M. (Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe)

"What's the frequency, Kenneth?" is your Benzedrine, uh-huh
I was brain-dead, locked out, numb, not up to speed
I thought I'd pegged you an idiot's dream
Tunnel vision from the outsider's screen
I never understood the frequency, uh-huh
You wore our expectations like an armored suit, uh-huh

I'd studied your cartoons, radio, music, tv, movies, magazines
Richard said, "Withdrawal in disgust is not the same as apathy"
A smile like the cartoon, tooth for a tooth
You said that irony was the shackles of youth
You wore a shirt of violent green, uh-huh
I never understood the frequency, uh-huh

"What's the frequency, Kenneth?" is your Benzedrine, uh-huh
Butterfly decal, rearview mirror, dogging the scene
You smile like the cartoon, tooth for a tooth
You said that irony was the shackles of youth
You wore a shirt of violent green, uh-huh
I never understood the frequency, uh-huh
You wore our expectations like an armored suit, uh-huh
    I couldn't understand
You said that irony was the shackles of youth, uh-huh
    I couldn't understand
You wore a shirt of violent green, uh-huh
    I couldn't understand
I never understood, don't fuck with me, uh-huh

  10. I'll Be You/Replacements (Westerberg)

    If it's a temporary lull
why am I bored right outta my skull?
Man, I'm dressing sharp and feeling dull

    Lonely, I guess that's where I'm from
    If I was from Canada
then I'd best be called lonesome

And if it's just a game
Then I'll break down just in case
Oh yeah, we're running in our last race

Well, I laughed half the way to Tokyo
I dreamt I was Surfer Joe
And what that means, I don't know

A dream too tired to come true
Left a rebel without a clue
And I'm searching for something to do

And if it's just a game
Then we'll hold hands just the same
So what, we're bleeding but we ain't cut

And I could purge my soul perhaps
    For the imminent collapse
Oh yeah, I'll tell you what we could do
You be me for a while
    I'll be you

A dream too tired to come true
Left a rebel without a clue
Won't you tell me what I should do?

And if it's just a lull
why am I bored right outta my skull?
Oh yeah, keep me from feeling so dull

And if it's just a game
Then we'll break down just in case
Then again, I'll tell you what we could do
You be me for a while
You be me for a while
    and I'll be you

  11. A Good Heart/Feargal Sharkey (McKee)

I hear a lot of stories, I suppose they could be true
All about love and what it can do to you
High is the risk of striking out, the risk of getting hurt
And still I have so much to learn

Well I know, 'cause I think about it all the time
I know that real love is quite a prize

And a good heart these days is hard to find
    True love, the lasting kind
A good heart these days is hard to find
So please be gentle with this heart of mine

My expectations may be high, I blame it on my youth
Soon enough I learned the painful truth
I'll face it like a fighter, then boast of how I've grown
Anything is better than being alone

Well I know, 'cause I learn a little every day
I know, 'cause I listen when the experts say

That a good heart these days is hard to find
    True love, the lasting kind
A good heart these days is hard to find
So please be gentle with this heart of mine

As I reflect on all my childhood dreams
My ideas of love weren't as foolish as they seemed
If I don't start looking now, I'll be left behind
And a good heart these days, it's hard to find

Well I know, it's a dream I'm willing to defend
I know it will all be worth it in the end

And a good heart these days is hard to find
    True love, the lasting kind
A good heart these days is hard to find
So please be gentle with this heart of mine

  12. The Street Only Knew Your Name/Van Morrison (Morrison)

Your street, rich street or poor
You should always be sure of your street
There's a place in your heart, when you know from the start
And you can't be complete without a street

Keep movin' on, just like a train
Sometimes you gotta look back to the street again
Would you prefer all those castles in Spain
Or a view of the street from your window pane

When you were young, so young
    So very very young
When you were young, so young
    So very very young
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name, oh your precious name, precious name

There was Walter and Joy, Kate and Roy
All hung around the corner lamplight
    Get together sing some songs
Like Boppin' The Blues—you make me feel alright

That was long before fortune and fame
No such thing as a star when you've played that game
    Everyone knew who everyone was
There was no preference in the street no, no

When you were young, so young
    So very very young
When you were young, so young
    So very very young
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name, oh your precious name

And you walked around in the heart of town
    Listening for that sound
And you walk around in the heart of town
    Listening for that sound
Blue Suede Shoes, it was the Blue Suede Shoes

When you were young, so young
    So very very young
When you were young, so young
    So very very young
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name

  13. Talk of the Town/Pretenders (Hynde)

Such a drag to want something sometime
One thing leads to another I know
Was a time wanted you for mine
    Nobody knew
    You arrived like a day
    And passed like a cloud
I made a wish, I said it out loud
    Out loud in a crowd
    Everybody heard
'twas the talk of the town

It's not my place to know what you feel
I'd like to know but why should I?
Who were you then, who are you now?
Common labourer by night, by day highbrow
Back in my room I wonder, then I
Sit on the bed, look at the sky
    Up in the sky
    Clouds rearrange
Like the talk of the town

    Maybe tomorrow, maybe someday
    Maybe tomorrow, maybe someday
You've changed your place in this world
You've changed your place in this world

Oh but it's hard to live by the rules
I never could and still never do
The rules and such never bothered you
You call the shots and they follow
I watch you still from a distance then go
Back to my room, you never know
I want you, I want you but now
Who's the talk of the town?

  14. Skyway/Replacements (Westerberg)

You take the skyway, high above the busy little one-way
In my stupid hat and gloves, at night I lie awake
    Wonderin' if I'll sleep
Wonderin' if we'll meet out in the street

    But you take the skyway
It don't move at all like a subway
It's got bums when it's cold like any other place
    That's warm up inside
Sittin' down and waitin' for a ride
    Beneath the skyway

Oh, then one day, I saw you walkin' down that little one-way
Where, the place I'd catch my ride most everyday
There wasn't a damn thing I could do or say
    Up in the skyway

    Skyway
    Skyway

  15. Ghosts/The Jam (Weller)

Why are you frightened, can't you see that it's you?
That ain't no ghost, it's a reflection of you
Why do you turn away and keep it out of sight?

Oh, don't live up to your given roles
There's more inside you that you won't show

But you keep it hidden just like everyone
You're scared to show you care, it'll make you vulnerable
So you wear that ghost around you for disguise

But there's no need just 'cos it's all we've known
There's more inside you that you haven't shown

So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

One day you'll walk right out of this life
And then you'll wonder why you didn't try

To spread some loving all around
Old fashioned causes like that still stand
Gotta rid this prejudice that ties you down

How do you feel at the end of the day?
Just like you've walked over your own grave

So why are you frightened, can't you see that it's you?
At the moment there's nothing, so there's nothing to lose
Lift up your lonely heart and walk right on through

  16. Drown/Smashing Pumpkins (Corgan)

No matter where you are, I can still hear you when you drown
You've traveled very far just to see if I'll come around, when I'm down
    All of those yesterdays
    Coming around

No matter where you are, I can still hear you when you dream
    You traveled very far
You traveled far, like a star
    And you are
    All of those yesterdays
    Coming around

    Is it something someone said?
    Was it something someone said?

    Yesterday the sky was you
And I still feel the same
Nothing left for me to do
And I still feel the same

    I wish, I wish I could fly
    I wish, I wish I could lie
    I will, I will try
    I will, I will
    Goodbye

  17. Grace/U2 (Bono/U2)

    Grace, she takes the blame
    She covers the shame
    Removes the stain
    It could be her name

    Grace, it's a name for a girl
It's also a thought that could change the world
And when she walks on the street
    You can hear the strings
    Grace finds goodness in everything

    Grace, she's got the walk
Not on a ramp or on chalk
She's got the time to talk
She travels outside of karma, karma
    She travels outside of karma
When she goes to work you can hear the strings
    Grace finds beauty in everything

Grace, she carries a world on her hips
No champagne flute for her lips
No twirls or skips between her fingertips
She carries a pearl in perfect condition

What once was hurt, what once was friction
What left a mark, no longer stings
Because Grace makes beauty out of ugly things
    Grace finds beauty in everything
    Grace finds goodness in everything

  18. Hidden Bonus Track: I Wish U Heaven/Prince (Prince)

Doubts of our conviction follow where we go
And when the world's compassion ceases still I no
4 your every touch I thank u so much
    4 your every kiss I...
    I wish u love
    I wish u Heaven I wish u Heaven

    If I see 11
    U can say it's 7
    Still I wish u Heaven
    I wish u love
    I wish u Heaven I wish u Heaven
